Manhunt follows Jasper home invasion

RIDGELAND - Three people were arrested Friday and three others were wanted by police after allegedly invading a home on Grays Highway and robbing a Ridgeland man, said Chief Deputy Roy Hughes of the Jasper County Sheriff's Office.

The six allegedly robbed the man and fired at least one shot inside his home.

In a manhunt that lasted for hours, deputies arrested Dondre Fields, 19, Thomas Young, 19, and a juvenile nearby.

All live in Ridgeland. All were charged with first-degree burglary and armed robbery.

Ridgeland man, 81, dies in school bus crash

JASPER COUNTY - A Ridgeland man died and two high school students were injured Thursday morning when a school bus and minivan collided in Jasper County.

The school bus driver, Cheryl Wright, 38, of Ridgeland was driving a Jasper County School District bus west on S.C. 336 when a minivan pulled into its path at Wagon Branch Loop at 6:12 a.m., according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Gospel group to sing at Jasper farmers market

Ridgeland – The “Gold City Quartet” will perform at 6 p.m. May 8 at the Jasper County Farmers Market in Ridgeland.

Two local gospel groups, “The Lighthouse Singers” and “The Owens Family” will sing as opening acts.

“Gold City is a much-loved group in the gospel music community and we’re excited to have them here,” said Kendall Malphrus, executive director for the Jasper County Chamber of Commerce. “This is a great event for families and friends to connect at.”

Food and drinks will be available. Be sure to bring a lawn chair.

Teen gets 40 years in Proctor Bright death

RIDGELAND - After what 14th Judicial Circuit Solicitor Duffie Stone called one of the "most senseless murders" he's ever seen, a Jasper County teenager will spend 40 years in prison after pleading guilty Monday to beating, stabbing and shooting 85-year-old Proctor Bright to death on July 18, 2008.

Bike ride to benefit diabetes awareness

HARDEEVILLE – Hardeeville’s inaugural Mayor’s Bike Ride for a Diabetes Cure will be May 22.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. for children up to ages 10. Adults can register beginning at 10 a.m. Registration will be at the Hardeeville City Hall, 205 E. Main St.

The cost is $10 per ride. All riders must wear a helmet. Bike rentals will be available.

Proceeds from the 3.5 mile bike race will be donated to the American Diabetes Association.

T-shirts will be handed out. The Sun City Cyclists and the Kickin’ Asphalt Cyclists of Beaufort County will participate.

Jasper County man dies from accidental shooting

A 24-year-old Jasper County man died from an apparently accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound at about 1:45 a.m. today (Saturday) in a home on Allen Road, off Marshland Drive on Hilton Head Island, Beaufort County Coroner Ed Allen said.

The deceased is Malcolm Wright of Garnett, on U.S. 321 in northern Jasper County.

His body was taken to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston for an autopsy.

“It was probably an accidental or unintentional discharge” of a handgun, Allen said.
Wright was visiting friends, he said.

Be the mayor of Hardeeville for a day

Hardeeville and Abundant Life Academy seniors can learn what it’s like to be the city’s mayor or city manager for a day.

All they have to do is write a 500-word essay on this topic: “Where do you see Hardeeville in the year 2020?”

Winners of the contest will shadow Mayor Bronco Bostick and Interim City Manager Ted Felder on May 6.
The day-long experience will end with a City Council meeting.

Essays are due no later than Monday, April 12. Winners will be chosen Monday, April 26.

Hardeeville students to host spring carnival

The Hardeeville Middle-High School Yearbook Committee will sponsor an inaugural spring carnival from noon to 5 p.m. April 24 in downtown Hardeeville.

Everyone is invited.

There will be rides, food, laser tag, face painting, dunking booths and prizes.

Proceeds from the carnival will support the school’s yearbook and go toward academic progress.

The carnival will be set up behind the Hardeeville City Hall, 205 E. Main St., in the Hardeeville Recreation Complex.

Cost is $5. Children under age 3 get in for free.
Booth space is available for businesses and vendors for $75.

Disc golfers battle for charity and bragging rights

HARDEEVILLE – Golf disc enthusiasts from across the Lowcountry and Georgia will gather Saturday, March 20, at Sgt. Jasper Park for Border Battle II.

The Jasper County Parks & Recreation Department and Savannah Disc Club will host the annual event.
It’s part of the park’s Spring Fling, which will include free kayaking lessons, live music, lunch and jumpy houses for children. Disc golf players from South Carolina will take on players from Georgia in a Ryder Cup format.

Last year’s event benefited Sue Chapman of Hardeeville, owner and operator of Swamp Girls Kayak Tours.
