Man shot and killed at pool hall

RIDGELAND – A 54-year-old Ridgeland man was shot and killed Friday at a pool hall, according to the Jasper County Coroner Martin Sauls.

Woodrow Brantley of Bees Creek Road was shot in the head at close range following an argument over a billiards game, he said.

The shooting occurred around midnight, Sauls said.
Brantley died at the scene.

No other information was available.

Electrocution suspected in death of wildlife refuge display worker

HARDEEVILLE – An Anniston, Ala., man was apparently electrocuted Wednesday morning while working on display wiring at the future visitors center for the Savannah Wildlife Refuge, Jasper County Coroner Martin Sauls said.

William Edward Spilman Jr., 42, was pronounced dead at the scene. He and several other employees of Southern Custom Exhibits of Anniston were working on displays for exhibits at the center on Beech Hill Road south of Hardeeville, Sauls said.

Holiday lights shine for charity

RIDGELAND – Chelsea Brendlen’s yard just outside of Ridgeland will be brightly lit with 80,000 holiday lights each night until the end of the year.

While it’s free to drive through the spectacle, she hopes you’ll make a donation, drop off a gift card or cut a check to “Christmas Wish.”

All of the money will be donated to Backus Children’s Hospital, which supports local families coping with cancer, Brendlen said.

Four killed in Hardeeville train collision

Hardeeville – Four people, including a 12-year-old girl, were killed late Monday night when the vehicle they were traveling in was struck by an Amtrak train in Hardeeville.

A sweet goodbye

Hardeeville is a little less sweet these days.

Honey the Money Dog – a long-time staple and attraction at the former El Cheapo gas station at Exit 5 – has died.

Honey went to the big dog park in the sky on Saturday, Nov. 7, while in surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from her kidney, according to her owner, Don Rogers.

“It’s really sad,” Rogers said. “She was like a family member.”

Honey was 11.

“It’s hardest at dinner,” he said. “She would be begging and sitting and wanting something and now she’s not.”

Operation Holiday Heroes seeks volunteers, begins sign-ups

The United Way’s Operation Holiday Heroes is in need of volunteers and wants to get the word out about an upcoming registration for presents.

Operation Holiday Heroes ties to ensure that every child in need will have a present to open on Christmas morning.

A sign-up and registration for the program will be 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. Nov. 16-20 at the United Way’s office in Ridgeland at 306 Third Ave.

Church office burglarized

Someone has stolen electronics and cash from the pastor’s office at First Baptist Church in Hardeeville, the Hardeeville Police Department said.

A TV, VCR, a laptop and desktop computers and a $350 were reported stolen, said Lt. Arnold Middleton of the Hardeeville Police Department.

The pastor’s office is located in a separate building behind the sanctuary at 13 Main St.

“The economy … people are actually doing things that they normally wouldn’t do,” Middleton said.

Former Hardeeville officers plead guilty to pocketing money during traffic stops

RIDGELAND – Two former Hardeeville police officers pleaded guilty Monday to charges they illegally pocketed money during traffic stops, charges that stem from an investigation by the S.C. Law Enforcement Division.

Tony Pollen of Ridgeland was arrested in January 2009 and charged with misconduct in public office and embezzling more than $5,000. On Monday, Judge J. Ernest Kinard sentenced him to five years of probation, 500 hours of community service, a $500 fine and restitution of $307.

Man barricades himself inside house

Hardeeville police said a 23-year-old man barricaded himself inside his home and refused to come out Wednesday morning after his girlfriend showed up at the police department with injuries.

Brian Fields is accused of beating his 21-year-old girlfriend at a Sauls Court home, according to Lt. Arnold Middleton of the Hardeeville Police Department.

The woman walked to the police department from the Sauls Court home around 10 a.m. and reported that Fields had beat her the previous night and again Wednesday morning, Middleton said.

Hardeeville teens injured in triple shooting

Three young men were shot early Saturday morning at the Bluffton Eagles’ baseball stadium off Buck Island Road.

One of the victims remains in critical condition.

According to the Bluffton Police Department, the shooting happened at about 2:15 a.m. at 157 Buck Island Road (that’s the ballpark’s address). Callers had heard gunshots. Responding officers found three teenagers had been wounded.
